This Month's Teaching (APRIL, 2026)
Conditions under which a Christian can divorce or remarry
Main Text: 1st Corinthians 7: 25-40
One of the most forbidden topics in the church today is the topic of separation between husband and wife, and the most dreaded word in the Church today after the word “Hell”, is the word “Divorce”. Many churches vehemently decree that "once you are married, you are married"-regardless of what types of trouble or incompatibility a couple faces. These churches will not discuss, teach, or even permit their members to seek a divorce or separation under any circumstance. But is this policy scriptural, and should the word “Divorce” be a taboo in the Church? This month, we will search the scriptures to see what our Great God, and our Great Master Jesus Christ says about this topic.
To begin with, it is not the will of God that husband and wife be divorced or even separated [Malachi 2: 14-16], but In [Deuteronomy 24:1], God Himself gave Moses the instruction to allow divorce between couples if under the suspicion of “uncleanness” (which could result from one or several issues), the wife no longer finds favors with the husband. This is not a contradiction from the same God that said in [Malachi 2:16] that He "hateth putting away". In [Mark 10: 1-9], Jesus Christ the Great Master clarified this by stating specifically that the separation in [Deuteronomy 24: 1] was permitted strictly because of the hardness of the hearts of the husbands who often rejected marital counselling (especially when they are bent on taking second wives that are often much, much, younger than their current wives), and warned in [Mark 10: 9] that "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder". But this topic does not end here because Christ Himself went further to outline the following conditions under which a Christian can separate or divorce their partner:
1. Adultery [Matthew 5:32, 19:9]. Adultery is a very serious matter with God. Do not let any preacher tell you that you must stay in an adulterous
marriage. You don’t have to. This is because the physical and spiritual damage adultery does to a marriage linger for a long, long time. Many
of the physical consequences of adultery may not be apparent or come to light immediately but will surface later in life.
2. Abandonment: When one of the partners abandons the marriage by walking away (for whatever reason), the other spouse can remarry only in
the Lord. [1st Corinthians 7:15]
3. Suggestion by a spouse to depart from the living God and the living Christ after they have known Christ, made partakers in the Holy Spirit,
and have become real, biblical Christians [Hebrews 6:4-5]. This is a grievous sin before God, and in [Deuteronomy 13:6-10], death penalty was
the punishment from departing from God, but Christ made it much easier by modifying it into “cutting that person off”, i.e. letting this person
out of your life for good. Our Lord Jesus Christ explained this in [Matthew 5:30]- “And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from
thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell”.
We know that the “Offense” mentioned here is the Gospel-a “rock of offence” [Matthew 18:7, Isaiah 8:14]. We also know that Christ was not
talking about physically dismembering our body parts. He is asking us to cut off anyone (including spouses) who suggests that we depart from
God or from Christ, or disobey the teachings, writings, standards, procedures, and commandments handed down to the Church by Christ and
His Holy Apostles.
In addition, a Christian spouse can re-marry (only in the Lord) under the following other conditions:
4. The death of a spouse [Romans 7:2-3, 1st Corinthians 7:39]. Death is the universal separator. When it comes, the other partner is free to
remarry.
5. Violence and aggression from a spouse (because this violates Christ’s commandment to the Church in [Ephesians 5:24-25, Colossians 3:19]
6. Pre-marital lies: That is, one of the partners lied to the other about his or her health, finances, religious/spiritual life, criminal background and
previous relationships. Because this marriage foundation is not of Christ, the marriage can be terminated.
7. One partner is driven from the church due to rebellion against the teachings of Christ and the Apostles-[Matthew 18:15-17]. Jesus Christ gave
us instructions and procedures on how to handle trespasses against God, and how to handle disputes in the Church. But, if there is anyone in
the church who would not follow these instructions and procedures, Christ commanded that they must be relegated unto “a heathen man
and a publican” [Matthew 18:17]. In other words, they should voluntarily leave or be driven from the church. When this happens, the partner
shall be free to remarry.
8. Incarceration after guilt and conviction, especially for murder.
When a spouse is arrested, convicted and incarcerated or sentenced to death for serious crimes, the partner is free to remarry.
Conclusion
The Scripture forbids remarrying an ex-spouse, after you've been divorced and remarried to someone else. The reason is given in [Deuteronomy 24:1-3], and because neither Christ nor the Apostles modified this instruction, it stays forever. So, if for some reason or another, a Christian remarries, and if for some reason or another this remarriage is not working, you cannot go back and remarry your former spouse. So, please, leave your "Ex" out of your remarriage picture. In conclusion, the scripture states that remarrying after separation or death of a spouse is a choice only you can make-not your pastor or your church, and in [1st Corinthians 7:37 and 40], Paul advises that remaining single after the death of a spouse or after a separation, is a great option.
Believers, it is your responsibility to emulate the bereans who"were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so". We would like to hear from you after you've read this message, but please make sure to search the scriptures first to find out whether our message is true or not.
